Biography of Alexander Graham BellBy Skylar Peyton
Alexander Graham Bell is well known worldwide for the creation of the telephone.
Born in 1847, Alexander Graham Bell had multiple occupations. He was a scientist, as well as an inventor, engineer, and professor. He even taught people who were deaf. Alexander Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to Alexander Melville Bell and Eliza Grace Bell. An interesting fact: Bell’s mother and wife were both deaf. When Alexander Graham Bell was born, he actually didn’t have a middle name. He was just Alexander Bell. He had 2 brothers who both had middle names, so when he was 10 years old, he wanted one too. When he turned 11 years of age, his father gave him a gift and allowed him to adopt the middle name Graham. So from that moment on, he became known as Alexander Graham Bell. Bell had always been interested in science and engineering. He built his very first invention at only 12 years old. It was a dehusking machine. It was quite an accomplishment, so it was used at a mill that was run by the family of Bell’s best friend, Ben Herdman. Bell dropped out of school at 15 years old because he felt he wasn’t being challenged enough. His real interest lay with inventing things. The only thing that interested Bell when it came to school subjects was science, particularly Biology. He started getting more interested in speech and sounds in 1863 when his father took him and his brothers to see an automaton that was developed by Sir Charles Wheatstone. The automaton machine simulated a human voice and Bell was fascinated by that. So fascinated, that he and his brother Melville actually built their own automaton head and even got it to say a few words. Tragedy struck in 1865 when Bell’s brother, Edward, got Tuberculosis and sadly died. In 1871, Bell’s father was offered a job to train the instructors at the Boston School for Deaf Mutes on a new system called the “Visible Speech System”. He turned it down and wanted his son to do it instead. So, Alexander Graham Bell went to Boston and he was quite successful at training the instructors on this visible speech system. He went on to train others at a couple of other deaf schools and asylums. He became a professor of Vocal Physiology and Elocution in 1872. But he returned to Boston in 1873 to continue experimenting on sound. In 1875, Bell and his assistant, Watson, were experimenting with acoustic sounds. After much experimentation, the telephone was invented. The lines of communication were finally open. We owe Alexander Graham Bell a great debt of gratitude for our modern telephone. Alexander Graham Bell died due to complications from Diabetes in 1922 at the age of 75 years. To honor Bell, after his funeral, at 6:25 PM Eastern Time, every phone in all of North America was silenced for one minute. He was buried in Nova Scotia, Canada. |
